Catherine Rampell reviews "Shakespeare's Slave"

According to Rampell, Shakespeare's Slave seems a bit overstuffed. "Unfortunately it tries to cram in just about every literary theme imaginable: racism, sexism, grief, greed, revenge, ambition, infidelity, pearl-clutching hypocrisy."

  1. I usually find attempts to show behind-the-scenes times of Shakespeare's life rather lame. I much prefer creative tangents on his actual works, such as the feminist "Moonlighting" episode that skewers "The Taming of the Shrew".

For that matter, any less than slavish interpretation of well known literature interests me. This summer I had a chance to get some Book of Mormon discount tickets (among other cheap Broadway tickets I found at http://amazonticketsonline.com for those interested), and I thoroughly enjoyed the irreverent mocking of a well known faith. I was raised Southern Baptist myself, and I think that's why I found this play so funny.
